The end

I retire from the workforce this week and to celebrate have decided to retire my current blogs and start afresh with a single consolidated blog -  My Bright Field  - to record the delights of my new life adventure. If you are interested follow me over there.  Whistlers Rest will appear occasionally along with my other gardens, towns and travels.

Coomber Melon Mountain

The Crepe Myrtles on the footpath in front of the house are coming into flower.  And that is our wonderful mountain backdrop.

Roses, roses all the way

We have named our new home "Rose Orchard Haus" because of its roses, fruit trees and that fact that it was owner-built by a German couple who lived here for over 50 years. Anyone who has followed Burnbrae Journal will know how many times I have tried to grow roses there and find it too shaded for success.  Here is it different, lots of roses in lots of different colours so I can choose my colour scheme.

The reality

Big Home (about half the size of Burnbrae) Big Block ( another half acre 2000 sq mtres to look after) Big Views (they are wonderful) The large lounge area with bay window has slow combustion wood fire heating, air conditioning and a ceiling fan (all great ). A huge separate dining room (now family room ) leads to the kitchen, which has an electric (gas) stove as well as a wood fuel stove with back up hot water heating. (The wood fuel stove is an interesting quirk which takes up so much room there is no space for the fridge in the kitchen!) Off the kitchen (not exactly as it is an enclosed kitchen) is a family room (now the dining room) overlooking the yard . The 3 bedrooms are all a good size, easily fitting larger beds (yes) . The retro bathroom is in great condition and has separate bath and shower (I like retro but am not sure about a green bath and toilet with blue tiled walls) . High (much lower than at Burnbrae but late 1950s high) ornate ceilings (not too ornate,

Our new home

It's time I introduced you to our new home in Kandos.  Here is the real estate description. Big Home Big Block Big Views Are you looking for a bit more? This builders own double brick 3 bedroom home has a lot to offer. The large lounge area with bay window has slow combustion wood fire heating, air conditioning and a ceiling fan. A huge separate dining room leads to the kitchen, which has an electric stove as well as a wood fuel stove with back up hot water heating. Off the kitchen is a family room overlooking the yard. The 3 bedrooms are all a good size, easily fitting larger beds. The retro bathroom is in great condition and has separate bath and shower. High ornate ceilings and carpets are throughout the home. Underneath the home is the laundry with the original copper, and a separate cellar for storage. Across from the laundry is an extra outside toilet. Located on the huge double block is a brick garage with power and water and additional carport. There are loads of e

A mystery solved

I have w ondering for some years now  why the previous owners of our block lopped the top off the wattles rather then cutting them to the ground. And chatting to the neighbours we found the answer ... it wasn't the owners it was the neighbours who cut the trees.  It turns out their goats love eating this variety of wattle so they were harvesting them from the then abandoned block.  They only wanted the leaves, not the wood, so lopped them off higher up. Many off them have sprouted again over time like the ones below.  They are coming into flower at the moment.

Welcome Rain

Was not much more than a week ago when I was moaning about the cold wet weather in the mountains.  Well in Mudgee I welcomed the afternoon downpour.  The temperature dropped from 37C to 27C in a matter of minutes. Back in Clandulla we were wondering when it would be our turn as it was still hot and dusty.  It took a while but did arrive and rained all night.
